The Importance of Humidity Control in Your Home

humidity-on-window

If you’ve looked at the different services we offer our customers, you’ll probably have seen the options available for indoor air quality services in Greenville, SC. Helping our customers enjoy the best air quality in their homes is as important to us as helping them control the temperatures in their homes.

Let’s take humidity for example. Without proper humidity control in a home, the best climate control won’t mean much. Extreme humidity levels create other household problems including health concerns and damage to furnishings and building materials.

But let’s slow down for a minute and go step-by-step through humidity and how it affects your home.

Low Humidity

It’s winter when we’re writing this, when low humidity is a common problem. Cold air doesn’t hold moisture well, and it’s typical for relative humidity levels to fall below 30% on the coldest days. This is too dry, and it creates several troubles:

  • The cold weather feels colder. Dry air doesn’t make the temperature lower, but it does make it easier for heat to escape from your body so you’ll feel colder.
  • Because people in your house will feel colder, they’ll need to rely on heating systems running more frequently, which runs up energy costs.
  • Dry air affects skin, eyes, and sinuses. Dried sinuses make the transmission of illness much easier.
  • The low humidity draws moisture from wood, causing it to crack. It can also cause paint to peel.
  • Static electricity gets out of control, and you know how annoying that can be.

High Humidity

Hot and humid days are standard for our summers, and everyone knows how much worse muggy hot weather is than dry hot weather. Here’s why humid air (more than 60% relative humidity) is a problem:

  • High levels of moisture in the air make it harder for the skin to release heat. This traps more heat in the body, causing hot weather to feel much hotter.
  • When everyone feels much hotter (around 8°F on average) because of humidity, that means needing to have the air conditioning system running more and consuming large amounts of electricity.
  • Humidity encourages the growth of mold and mildew, both of which will cause damage to furnishings and building materials. Mildew eats quickly through drywall, and mold warps and destroys wood.
  • The presence of black mold creates major health complications for anyone in your home.
