Regular maintenance for your HVAC system is one of the best gifts you can give to it. And that means it’s one of the best gifts you can give yourself because you’ll have a heating system that will keep your family warm with few troubles through the season and save you money.
We recommend our customers schedule their heating maintenance in Greenville, SC with us during the fall. It’s good timing that ensures heaters are prepared for whenever the first cold weather arrives and they have to get to work.
But what if you missed the fall months for making an appointment? No, don’t decide your heater can just sit out maintenance for the year. That’s a huge mistake! It’s better to get it done later than not at all, and since our winters are shorter than others, you’re still not too far behind. (After all, winter doesn’t technically start until more than a week after we post this.)
Here’s the important thing to keep in mind about heating maintenance tune-ups and inspections: there is no expiration date for maintenance. You don’t lose out on all the benefits if you miss the recommended window. As long as you have maintenance for your heating system each year, you’re in excellent shape—far better than if you skipped it.
Many Benefits of Heating Maintenance Are Long-Term
One of the reasons that late heating maintenance is still worthwhile is that many of maintenance’s benefits are long-term ones rather than just benefitting you in the coming winter. There are two key ones we want to mention:
Longevity
Installing a furnace, heat pump, or other heating system is a significant investment. To get the best return on that investment, the heater needs to work for as long as it usefully can. Your heating system has an estimated service life (such as 15 years for a gas furnace), and if you can get it to work for around that long, you’ve got a good investment return.
However, for any heater to last its estimated service life, it must have maintenance. Skipping maintenance (or not having it done ever) takes years off a heating system’s lifespan because it allows wear and tear to get hold of it early. That 15-year furnace may only last 9 years, stealing 6 good years of heating and forcing you to pay early for a new heater. Maintenance helps your heater do the job you paid for.
Warranty Protection
Check the warranty on your heating system. You’ll probably find a sentence just like this: Damage caused by improper maintenance is not covered under the warranty. Those words carry a lot of weight. If your heating system starts to decline and needs repairs, the warranty will not pay for those repairs if the damage is because you haven’t had the system regularly maintained. In some cases, lack of maintenance may end up voiding the warranty entirely.
You never want to void the warranty on your heater, which often covers 10 years’ worth of parts. You may end up paying for an extremely expensive repair that otherwise would have been covered.
